Beezy Bailey (RSA)

Born in Johannesburg in 1962, Beezy Bailey has become a prominent fixture on the local contemporary art scene. He is also active, and exhibits extensively, internationally. Bailey studied in London in the mid-80′s. He makes paintings, works on paper, prints, sculptures and ceramics. His work is distinguished by an exuberant use of colour and paint application, as well as a highly personal use of symbolic subject matter. He juxtaposes the familiar with the unexpected, and his work is populated by an anarchic cast from mythology, fantasy, history and his own highly fertile imagination: angels, demons, jesters, Chinese emperors…

A highly vocal and often controversial role-player in the local art scene, Bailey is remembered as his alter-ego Joyce Ntobe, through whom he challenged the S.A.N.G’s affirmative acquisition policy in the early 1990′s. Bailey has had productive collaborations with musicians such as David Bowie, Brian Eno, Dave Matthews and Arno Carstens, as well as photographers Adam Letch and Zwelethu Mthethwa and Owlhouse sculptor, Koos Malgas. He is collected extensively both locally and abroad.
