Charming Baker (UK)

Charming Baker’s rise to artwork prominence occurred in 2006 when paintings he had displayed in his London home were admired and acquired by English journalist, Tim Fennell. This led to a solo show at The Truman Brewery, a hire space in London favoured by urban artists. Further exhibitions, both in the U.K. and The United States, followed. At a 2008 show in Los Angeles, the rock manager Pat Magnarella (Green Day) signed on to manage Baker’s now burgeoning career. Shows in New York followed and Baker returned to the U.K. something of a conquering hero.

Baker’s career, which began in graphic design following a degree at London’s Central St Martins School (1988), is unconventional in that he uses social media, posters, the Internet and word-of-mouth to promote his work rather than the conventional gallery and art-press route.

Making extensive and metaphorical use of animal imagery and subject matter culled from electronic visual media, Baker makes paintings and prints. High profile champions of his work include Paul Smith (who uses him in his eponymous Paul Smith London ad campaign) and Damien Hirst, who both collect his paintings.
