Mariette Bergh (RSA)

Mariette Bergh was born in 1982 and has spent most of her time in Johannesburg. There she specialized in painting and sculpture at The National School of Arts and then furthered her studies through Vega, the Brand Communication School. Thereafter she worked in the media industry as a graphic designer and art director for 6 years. Mariette felt the work was too predictable and monotonous and, as she loves the feeling of being an explorer most, she decided to pursue art full-time.

Mariette finds her inspiration in people and more recently the interdependence between opposites. In her own words, “I look between the cracks of unmeaning, and there I find something that takes on a life of its own.”

Counting music, poetry and writings as some of her biggest influences, she often uses hand-painted words and phrases in her work. Other influences on her work also include the likes of Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Jim Morrison.
