Shepard Fairey (USA)

Shepard Fairey (born in Charleston, South Carolina, 1970) is perhaps the best-known and most recognizable graphic artist at work today. This follows his 2008 Barack Obama “Hope” poster which he produced independently in support of Obama’s ’08 democratic presidential campaign. A graduate of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, he emerged from the skateboarding scene, and it’s associated aesthetic concerns. His career may be described as that of a visual (graphic) art activist. His use of public urban spaces such as city walls, billboards and signage, and surfaces for his awareness-raising campaigns include stickers, posters, decals and stencils. As he has acquired greater reputation and stature, his output has grown to include more permanent surfaces such as clothing, editions prints and artworks on metal and canvas.

He is well-known for his ‘Obey’ body of work. Fairey, for a graphic artist, has work in an impressive number of important public collections, including The Smithsonian and The National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C., M.O.M.A (N.Y.) and The V. & A., London.
